Still love it despite the rains

Last few weeks, the entire country's weather was miserably wet and chilly. Many people were disappointed... too ready for summer. Rest assured, finer forecasts ahead.

This shot is taken this week, on a Wanganui rainy day. For me, it is a reminder that Wanganui could still look cosy and charming despite the rains. So what we can change is the attitude towards rain - perhaps a hot cafe mocha or a hot cup of chocolate with cookies or muffins, with nice soothing background music while working will do the trick :-)

We Need More Trees in Wanganui Suburbs

Isn't this just a lovely sight? Unfortunately, this is just one of the few streets in Wanganui lined with beautiful trees. We hope the local government would invest more in beautifying the other suburbs. Trees increase the value of any property and make any place much more pleasant. Yes there are restrictions in terms of what trees can grow especially in Castlecliff area however this doesn't limit the chance to improve these suburbs.

In 2009, I had emailed Build@wanganui.govt.nz

I had mentioned that planting more trees are quite a more affordable solution to beautifying certain Wanganui streets, improve the look of a property ( Not just trees but even flowering plants or shrubs if trees can't grow on certain locations )

I had asked the help of the council if there was any subsidy or any help they can give me to get this done. Then a representative visited us and said he would get back to us... he never did.

So hopefully, if there is anyone interested in helping me out in this campaign, please help me email the appropriate person. I am sure that with the help of the community, we can add more trees to certain locations in Wanganui.

If you live in Wanganui, you're fortunate to have 3 big supermarkets right at the city center. Here are some tips on where to buy the most affordable commodities.

1. Whanganui Traders Market is on every Saturday, near the Whanganui River. Usually, the traders give very low prices for common fruits and vegetables compared to leading grocery stores. Some traders also sell flowering plants and herbs at lower prices.

2. If you family loves meat and fish, it's best to visit Pak N Save. In fact Pak N Save occasionally provides huge discounts on seasonal fruits like Kiwi, feijoas and strawberries.

3. New world and Countdown promote sales every week. However, they only provide sales on certain items and hope that you buy other things you need in the same store. These other 'items' you might need to buy are not necessarily sold cheap. So unless you really need the items on sale on New World and Countdown, it pays to visit Pak N Save and the River Market first.

4. Smaller groceries in suburbs like Castlecliff, Gonville, Wanganui East & Aramoho also have low-priced goods - occasionally. However, chips and cookies are quite expensive in these stores.

5. If you have a huge family and you love fish, there's a fish store in Heads Road in Castlecliff which sells bigger quantities of fish but at more affordable rates.

6. New World sells good quality vegetables and imported food options.

7. Countdown has more selection of Asian condiments.

How to Keep Warm this Winter

The late winter brings wretched weather. According to the news Ohakune area will be blanketed with snow. Freezing weather in Wellington is expected.

So this article is all about how to keep warm in Wanganui this chilly winter.

1. 1 layer every 5 degree drop. Considering 20 degrees C to be pleasant weather, with 1 layer clothing needed, a 5 degree drop to 15 degree means 2 layers needed, especially when there is wind chill. Wanganui is quite a windy city! At 10 degrees, 3 layers are recommended and if the temperature is hovering around 5 degrees C, 4 layers would be recommended plus wind breaker for strong winds.

2. Wear wool socks, wool scarf and a beanie. This is important to keep the head warm. Around 30% of heat is lost from shoulders up.

3. Wear wool slippers around the house.

4. Exercise! Exercise! Exercise. The body produces a lot of heat. The extra exercise will keep your body's metabolism going and that will keep you warmer.

5. Drink hot tea or hot beverages when you feel cold.

6. Hot soup is great for a cold night.

7. Listen to classical music during the day. Winter chills, shorter days make you feel a bit down. Yes gloomy weather can make you less productive. So try to find ways to be inspired and focused.

I can't help but reminisce about going to Orange cafe, town center of Wanganui.

Orange is my favorite cafe because it has Wifi connection. Though sometimes wifi isn't working. The coffee is good and the location is perfect especially on a sunny day.

Walking around the Victoria mainstreet, tourists and locals will enjoy flowers in bloom - all throughout the year.

The cafe experience is one of a kind in Wanganui. For a quiet experience and if you need to have a conversation with a client, I would suggest Elements Cafe

For those who like to have a bit of a garden experience, you might want to try going to Parnell's Cafe & Gallery. Though the pricing is a bit more for most of the items on the menu. I'd say 5 to 10% higher than other local cafes.

For those who like to have a view of the river, you can try visiting the Zinc cafe at the I-site Wanganui Building or the La Terrazza in Taupo Quay in front of Countdown.

For those who simply want a good cup of coffee, the best coffee in town is Orange Cafe.

Have a coffee and a chat, for a quiet, soothing experience in a charming town.

My suggestions would be:

A group of young men are using a chain of eateries to spread their brand of Indian cuisine throughout South Taranaki and Wanganui.

Wanganui's Tasty Indian restaurant is one of three, manager Raghav Anand says.

It opened in the former Red Flame restaurant in Victoria Ave's top block on December 17 and sells buffet Thai and Indian lunches and Thai, Indian and tandoori evening meals. The restaurant, which has a nine-year lease, seats 50 inside and 10 outside, and customer numbers are building.

I love Korean food so I thought of giving Auri a try. And I was pleasantly surprised.

For a very affordable value of $10.50/meal, I appreciated the change. I'm a bit biased as I love Kimchi so I highly recommend this place.

The recent 7.1 Christchurch earthquake has rattled many of us and leaves a lot of friends and loved ones in Christchurch still shaken.

So this post attempts to somehow spread information about earthquakes in Wanganui in the past and what we can do in case there'd be an earthquake in our area.

Significant earthquakes for Wanganui

Date	Magnitude	Epicentre	Effect in Wanganui
1843	7.5	Wanganui	Extensive lateral spreading of the terrace margin to the Whanganui River. Putiki church demolished.
1848	7.1	Marlborough	Minor lateral spreading in the riverbed. Some wharf damage. The western bank of the Whanganui River (Taupo Quay) rose by one metre.
1855	8.2	Wairarapa	Extensive lateral spreading and fissuring of lower terrace along the Whanganui River, especially Taupo Quay. Extensive wharf damage. Most chimneys destroyed. Much broken crockery inside houses. Putiki's new brick church destroyed. The shock cracked the iron pan under the swamps of Gonville, allowing the water to drain completely away.
1868	7 - 7.5	Cape Turnagain	On October 19 there was a large shallow earthquake, magnitude 7.0-7.5, off Cape Turnagain; changes in river levels were reported at Wanganui and Waitara. These were possibly caused by a tsunami, but may have been the result of seiching (earthquake-generated waves).
1897	?	Waverley area	Loss of water supply. Subsidence/lateral spreading. Damage to wharves. Loss of chimneys in some areas. Minor ground cracking in Glasgow Street.
1934	7.6	Pahiatua	Extensive chimney damage in some areas. Two slips and fissuring of the riverbank at Aramoho. Break in water pipes at the foot of St John's Hill. Rutland Hotel damaged.
1991	6.5	Off Bulls coast	1000 chimneys damaged. 2140 claims to the Earthquake Commission.

What to tell children about earthquakes

Find safe places in every room of your home and classroom. Look for safe places inside and outside of other buildings where you spend time. The shorter the distance you have to travel when the ground shakes, the safer you will be.
If you are indoors during an earthquake, drop, cover and hold on. Get under a desk, table or chair. Hold onto the legs and cover your eyes (broken glass). If there's no table or desk nearby, sit down against an interior wall. An interior wall is less likely to collapse. Pick a safe place where things will not fall on you, away from windows, bookcases or tall, heavy furniture. It is dangerous to run outside when an earthquake happens. Bricks, roofing and other material may fall during and immediately after earthquakes, injuring people near the building.
Wait in your safe place until the shaking stops, then check to see if you are hurt. You will be better able to help others if you take care of yourself first, then check the people around you. Move carefully and watch out for things that have fallen or broken, creating hazards. Be ready for additional earthquakes called 'aftershocks'.
If you must leave a building after the shaking stops, use the stairs, not the lift. Earthquakes can cause fire alarms and fire sprinklers to go off. You will not be certain whether or not there is a real fire. As a precaution, use the stairs.
If you are outside during an earthquake, stay outside. Move away from buildings, trees, streetlights and power poles. Kneel down and cover your head. Many injuries occur within three metres of the entrance to buildings. Bricks, roofing etc can fall from the building. Trees, streetlights and power lines may also fall, causing injury or damage.

Recognition of Alternative names for the future

The spelling of the name of our district has been in the media and a topic of conversation for some time

The Government has made a pragmatic decision that we need to work with, let’s not waste any more time arguing about who is right and who is wrong.

If we are truly a community who wants to work together, the resolution of this issue will enable us to do move forward and tackle some of the bigger issues we face.

The Minister for Land Information Maurice Williamson told us and the rest of New Zealand earlier this year that, “The official geographic name for the city of Wanganui will be the alternatives ‘Whanganui' or ‘Wanganui’.

He said “My intention to assign alternative names for the city allows people to choose the name they prefer.

During extensive consultation it became clear to me that local iwi were seeking an acknowledgement of something that is very important to them. They wanted recognition and respect for their history and their language.

It was equally clear that the majority of the city's residents did not want change forced on them.”

The Minister also said that “On balance that alternative naming respectfully acknowledges the correct spelling of the Māori word "Whanganui". It also respects the views of those who have always known the city's name to be spelt "Wanganui.”

Now that this right has been conferred upon us by the government, as mayor I would respect the choice of any individual to use the option they prefer.

The Whanganui River is one of the most pieceful places on earth - do not miss the kayak trip you can either do with the mailman or Whanganui River Top 10 Holiday Park. You can do 5, 8 and 25 km with the holiday park. The river is amazing in length and width. The river is also 25km tidal with arise and fall of about 2m every 6 hours.

The saying of the locals is: I am the river and the river am I - and this is the sensation this Nile provides.

Chairman of Whanganui District Health Board

Latest news from Wanganui Chronicle discusses that the chairman of Whanganui District Health Board has been asked to step aside.

"The public in Wanganui and also throughout New Zealand have been led to believe that Wanganui Hospital has an unsafe radiology department, which (the committee) refutes completely," the committee said. This development is the fallout from news stories in February which revealed the radiologist employed by the WDHB earned about $600,000. The board's chief executive was also asked if the workload by the sole radiologist compromised patient safety.

In a later radio news item, Mr Solomon suggested the hospital was "probably not safe".

After the board meeting of March 5, Mrs Joblin wrote to Mr Solomon and said the board was asking him for an explanation of his comments.

"What concerns the board," she wrote on March 17, "is that your raising issues in public and passing opinions on the consequences, before management had the opportunity to fully answer your questions, appears to be unfair to our staff, questions the medical integrity of your colleagues and unnecessarily raises in a public forum the issue of the hospital being unsafe."

Salsa is a syncretic dance genre from Cuba, as the meeting point of European and African popular culture. It later spread to Puerto Rico and the rest of the Caribbean Isles. Salsa is essentially Cuban with deep Afro-Cuban beats, and additional musical influences from Son, Guaguancó, Rumba. Salsa was later improvised to regional rhythms such as Boogaloo, Pachanga, Guaracha, and Bomba.^[1]

"Inflatable canoeing I would suggest is safer than other forms of canoeing for a number of reasons, though the risks of rivers should never be under-stated. This accident report pertaining to the death of an 18 year old girl on a NZ grade 2 river highlights the negative perception attached to rivers. There are several important facets to safety on the river:
1. Awareness of river conditions - Research is required before entering a river. Most Western countries have a canoe guide, i.e. Whitewater NZ is available in most NZ libraries. Similar guides are available in other countries or states.
2. Awareness of river hazards - do you know where the difficult rapids are? Do you know the latest warnings? Has the river been in flood, perhaps presenting new risks after boulders or logs have moved? If you are unsure of how rivers work, you are less likely to anticipate risks.
3. Awareness of how river hazards or risk vulnerability can change - The river is a dynamic system; it is always changing. The changes can be gradual (as under normal water flow) or rapid (as in cases of flood), so if you are considering canoeing after a long time or after flood, you should consult local canoe groups, or scout rapids for risks.
4. Preparedness for conditions - Has there been a river flood lately? Do you know the river height, and how changes in river height impact the river.
5. Support in case of mishap - good if you have a cell phone or ready access to a road"

Walking around Wanganui CBD, I saw this sign posted in front of the Wanganui Chronicle Building. I had to take a photo of it. This sign is no longer there. I am not surprised.

I do not agree that Wanganui has the cheapest homes in New Zealand's north island. Wairoa Properties for Sale * Here you can see 4 bedroom homes at $80k. Here's a brick home in Taumarunui for 75k. Click here.

Also, I don't think we need to use the word "cheapest" to describe the homes in Wanganui. There are definitely more than 200 properties in the market that are nicely done up character homes/villas... and they are not cheap.

However, I would say that Wanganui offers great value properties, if not the *best* value properties, in New Zealand. Why?

Wanganui is a lovely town. It has good educational and sports facilities. It has wonderful gardens and some business activity. It has good-size population of around 40k. It's quiet and yet full of activity for those who seek it.

Majority of Wanganui's suburbs are only 5 minutes drive to town. It's a convenient place to live. It has a very mild climate and a lot of fresh produce from local farmers. It is a self-sufficient town that offers all the services you need.

Eventually, Wanganui Chronicle changed their headline -- using the words "Wanganui homes among most affordable".

My favorite restaurant in Wanganui is "The Oaks" (restaurant cafe and bar) for the following reasons:
1. I love seafood. They offer an all-you-can eat seafood buffet every Saturday night, 6pm. You have to make reservations though. This is their website. From memory, they serve the following on their buffet menu:
a. Soup (for starters) - pumpkin or vegetable soup - nice and creamy
b. Bread and assorted ham
c. Egg and vegetable salads
d. Coleslaw
e. Fried rice with lots of shrimp and crab meat
f. Oysters!
g. Squid salad
h. Steamed vegetables - potato, broccoli, cauliflower
i. Roasted pork
j. Fish Fillets
k. Calamari

2. They have wonderful deserts -pavlova, lots of fruits and strawberries, chocolate cake, eclairs
3. The Oaks is a casual dining place.
4. The pricing is so reasonable at $30 per person.

Wanganui town center is no doubt the most beautiful town center in NZ. Why? I have listed a few reasons here.

1. Scenic river view
2. Character buildings
3. Lovely flower baskets consistent all through out the town center
4. Wonderful big shady trees
5. Pleasant, reasonably priced cafes
6. Proximity to key locations like the Wanganui library, Sergeant Gallery, River walks, shopping centers

The other "best town center" contenders are (not in order):
1. Whakatane
2. Taupo
3. Wanaka
4. Blenheim

This evaluation is based on:
1. Town character / uniqueness
2. Colorful gardens
3. Affordability of cafes and restaurants
4. Water view
5. Trees
6. Weather

Despite these wonderful characteristics, there's still depopulation in Wanganui. People are still leaving.

New to NZ or not, ignorance to law is not an excuse. Here are some laws on legal ages that you might want to know:
1. Education is very important in NZ. School is compulsory from ages 6 to 16.
2. If a child is less than 14 years old, it is illegal to leave them without care of an adult (more than 15). A person can babysit younger children if they are at least 15 years old. And yes, you'd need to be 14 to be able to buy fireworks.
3. At the age of 16, a person can apply for fire arms license or have a tattoo. However, if you really want to have a tattoo at 16, you'd need parental consent.
4. A person can apply for learner's permit at the age of 15.
5. A person can't get married before he is 16. If you want to get married at 17, you'd need parental consent. 16 is a powerful age... a person is allowed to choose to get involved intercourse or even contraception and abortion... it is still expected that they know how to properly deal with the consequences of their actions. You can work full time at 16. But to work in the navy, army or air force, you have to be 17 plus a parental consent. At 18, you don't need it.
6. At 18, you can be obliged to serve in a jury. 18 is also the age wherein you can buy alcohol or tobacco, or even start gambling.

A Walk In The Bason Park

Bason Botanical Gardens in Wanganui has been acclaimed by the New Zealand Gardens Trust as a 'Garden of Regional Significance', so it's one of the places to visit in Wanganui. Once part of a farm, the gardens were gifted to Wanganui by Stanley and Blanche Bason in 1996. In winter, you would appreciate the surreal ambiance of strong trees without leaves. In In spring you'll find a mass of camellias, daffodils, magnolias and flowering cherry trees. In summer, roses and perennials paint the landscape with a rainbow of colours. In fall, you'd marvel at the golden leaves of Bason's established trees. Walking trails lead around the gardens and the original homestead. Weddings and functions at held at the homestead.

Buck's Sentence...

A few weeks ago, TV3 featured Buck, a Wanganui resident's pet dog... the news was sensationalized -- a badly hurt dog -- donations poured in. But the recent news is found below (taken from Wanganui Chronicle):

Wanganui teenager Bronson Stewart's dog, Buck, could end up back on death row. prospect arises because he has still not registered the dog with the Wanganui District Council.

Bronson told the Chronicle yesterday he hoped a national fund, set up by the SPCA for badly injured animals needing veterinary care, would pay Buck's registration fee.

"Because it is all part of Buck's wellbeing," he said.

But Bronson said he hoped to get the nearly 6-month-old dog registered within the next few weeks.

However, the Wanganui District Council's animal control bylaw states dogs must be registered by the time they are three months old. The dog also needs to be microchipped, which costs around $48.

If an unregistered dog is picked up by an animal ranger and impounded, the dog will not be released back to its owner until it is registered and microchipped. Otherwise it could be re-homed or euthanased.

I am an animal lover and I love my pet pekingese dog, Skip. I give him a lot of gifts and fancy treats when I get home from an overseas trip.

It fascinates me how much people spend on their pets... which makes me wonder, what about those people who actually need the money or the food to eat... I am talking about the homeless and the people in third world countries. Are these people less important than pets?

This is a very hard question to answer. As many animal lovers actually develop close relationships with their pets, something that they never had developed with other people. And perhaps something that other people might have shunned them away before.
